A Line From Us

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul insisted forcefully, “For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:2). This issue of Fishers bears a strong gospel focus - and we make no apologies for it.

God’s Remarkable Compassion for Helpless Sinners
proclaims the gospel from the parable of the lost sheep. Indeed, our Lord is the Good Shepherd, who ventures out to seek lost souls; who, when He finds those sheep, gently carries them home. It is not that sinners went looking for God, but God sent His Son into the world, “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk 19:10). Herein lies the unambiguous demonstration of God’s love for the wicked.

The Precious Thoughts of God brings us deeper into the mysteries of the Gospel, to God’s electing love prior to creation, to God’s sustaining love after a believer’s conversion. Christians today desperately need to grasp the joyful bewilderment of the psalmist as he sang, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” (Ps 139:17).

Two stories involving the childhood of two girls describe the gospel in action. In God Has Taught Me From My Youth, a Christian mother reflects on the influence of the gospel in her life since her early days. Good Imitators, on the other hand, explains the gospel in its simplest terms to one who has yet come to know Christ.

Honour Your Father and Your Mother and God’s Love Sandwich further elaborate on the life changes that the gospel ought to have on those who are born again.

Finally, Our Gospel Indebtedness to Strangers reminds us of our mission to bring this precious gospel to those who have never heard it before – the unreached, unengaged people groups of the world, as well as to our neighbours who have not trusted in Christ for the salvation of their souls. We must proclaim God’s saving good news to those we know and have a relationship with – but this does not absolve us from our biblically mandated responsibility to bring Christ to strangers.

May the Lord bless you richly, as you ponder His Word expounded in this issue.
